[11:02] Lord, enter us, fill us, surround us, lift us We open ourselves to you, Lord, in this time That we may receive you, grow closer to you We are ready, we are open, we are willing To receive your Holy Spirit To glorify you For you are good And you are holy And you are mighty And you are our God In Jesus' name we pray Amen Please be seated Thank you Woman Now, we canöten How you look upon your presence To worship the God In the Heik in this church whether the building was-open or closed On Sundays and Saturdays and churches, everywhere One of the things that you can always count on is the offering We've had to find different ways to do it receive an offering why do we ask people to give well air conditioning pretty good thing our staff this beautiful building and to provide leadership and ministry for all of us get welcome all kinds of giving some of it includes money most of all we invite you during this time of gifting of mute to be willing to give your heart your hands your feet your voice and your thoughts good morning before before I do the song for you I wanted to say a few words so when we were first informed that pastor Sherry would be leaving us to go to the next place that God is sending her I was shocked and so sad my husband Phil and I have been coming here to Pendleton for at least 19 years or so and she's been there all through it even before she was pastor Sherry and my children have been born and grew up here under her leadership in such wonderful ways and now in the midst of a year that has been so filled with change and transition and loss and so many challenges that felt so out of our control here was another transition and loss for me for this congregation and then in a brief conversation that I was having with pastor Sherry one day she shared a little bit of what this move would entail for her the drastic changes to her life that would now have have to look very different of course from what she has known for all these many years and then certainly we also know of her recent loss the loss of her father the passing of her father at least from this earth and so while having to move through loss and disconnection to some extent from the people in the life that she has known she is now being asked to step into new relationships with people she doesn't know and people who don't know her who don't know how fabulous she is yet and personally as I think about this I know that this would feel really lonely and intimidating for me and if I'm honest I don't know that I could make the same choices that she and I know that other pastors must make to follow the call of God so I wanted to give her something in the way that feels meaningful for me and hope that it is meaningful for her which is to write a song for her and certainly there are many different ways for each of us to head out in faith to follow God's call into the world to those who are

[15:08] similar and different from us and sometimes oh so very different from us even when there is worry and fear about how we may be received but in faith we know that it's not about our skill or strength but about God's plan if we're able to as the saying goes let go and let God and as pastor Sherry is demonstrating following her faith in the particular way that God is calling her to do now the song is for and about pastor Sherry and her faith I'm heading out out on my own though filled with the down and feeling so alone

[16:17] I'm reaching out falling again searching around for anything to hold and help me stand where is your promise your promise Lord need your assurance for this uncertain road ahead I'll trust in you I'll follow through through and even in the dark you've always been my light and once again walking in faith to the end knowing that you're always by my side

[17:19] Lord you are my shepherd Lord you are my shepherd I shall not want for anything and though I'm weak in shadow your strength is everything I need all I have for you for you for you for you for you for you I look inside where I can't hide so much seems wrong and how will I belong

[18:24] I'm letting go release control let all these fears now disappear and let my heart be here your promise Lord and your assurance for this uncertain road ahead I trust in you I'll follow through and even in the dark you've always been my light and once again walking in faith to the end knowing you are always by my side

[19:29] Lord you are my shepherd I shall not want for anything and though I'm weak in shadow your strength is everything I need all I am for you for you all I am all I am for you for you for you for you for you for you you

[20:37] Thank you.

[21:07] Thank you.

[21:37] Thank you.

[22:07] In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. You may be seated. I want to share some good news before we pray.

[22:20] Daniel Prendergast. When was he born? Wednesday. So he was born to Stephen and Nicole Prendergast, Tim and Gene's tenth grandchild, and Olive Burbage's tenth great-grandchild.

[22:39] So praise God for that. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I'm thinking I'll never be able to have that.

[22:50] I'll never have that many grandchildren. I can hope and we can pray. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. This is a time when we do offer our hearts to God in prayer, knowing that God knows your every need.

[23:04] God knows your every broken heart or spirit. God knows those who are wounded, those who are waiting for death, those who are sick, and those who are uncertain.

[23:19] So let us come before God reminding ourselves where to give our needs and our loves. Oh, wonderful God, we come to you knowing that in every life, in every home, in every family, there are changes and transitions.

[23:42] A new child born, the loss, the very difficult loss of a loved one. There are changes and transitions in places we live, in jobs we serve, in places we call home.

[24:03] Lord, there are changes and transitions in relationships, both the taking in and the letting go, the disappointment, the sadness, and the great rejoicing and hope.

[24:16] Lord, we pray that you will hold them all. Hold us all and all we represent close to your heart. Come to place them in your care for healing, whatever that means.

[24:34] We come to place them in your spirit for encouragement. And Lord, sometimes them is us. So we ask you to bless us, each one, with a sense of your presence, the ability to praise your name.

[24:55] And Lord, in the times when we feel like we can't or we won't, just knowing that you're there everywhere, forever and ever, never leaving us, we give you so much thanks and praise.

[25:10] We all need you. And so we come asking. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, take us and all we represent this day and give us your presence.

[25:31] Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen.

[26:10] Amen. Amen. Good morning. Amen. Good morning. Today's Bible readings are from the book of Hebrews, chapter 11, verses 1, 2, and 8, and chapter 12, verses 1 through 3.

[26:29] Now, faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. By faith, Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as an inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.

[26:51] Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.

[27:10] For the joy set before him, he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

[27:26] This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Thank you, Laura. I assume that's not mine. So, Jesus said in John 7, 37 through 38, let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.

[27:45] For the scriptures declare rivers of living water will flow from the heart of anyone who believes in me. So, what happens if that living water that's supposed to be freely flowing within us gets blocked and stopped?

[28:04] Have you ever seen the negative impact when water gets blocked and stopped and not doing what it's supposed to be doing? My mom and dad have a piece of property in the southern tier, and Joshua was staying with my dad out there for the past year, and my dad and Joshua were continually complaining about beavers.

[28:23] Thinking, what's wrong with beavers? I mean, my whole experience with beavers really is just from Lady and the Tramp, you know? I mean, they're just cute little guys. They're helpful, you know, fuzzy little creatures.

[28:35] They're wonderful, right? And when I went down there, I experienced firsthand the destruction that the beavers can cause as they built up huge dams.

[28:47] There was this water that runs through the land that goes on my parents' property, and it flows and flows and provides for all of the land and the animals, and instead these beavers blocked it up, and in the process, basement is flooded.

[29:06] Stagnant water settles. It's just, it's bad. Beavers, bad. Beavers, not cute little fuzzy creatures. Beavers can be destructive.

[29:17] And we have to make sure then that they don't get to what they're working on and building that dam that'll stop up the works that needs to be flowing and needs to be providing life to what's going on out there.

[29:28] And the same type of thing can happen in our spiritual life when we have something blocking the rivers of life flowing from within us, flowing in faith.

[29:39] When it doesn't move, it doesn't bring life then. And when that happens, it's often destructive and causes harm to ourselves and others. We could become stagnant and foul.

[29:50] Now, this blocking can come from sin in our life, unrepentant sin, or it can come from discouragement, pain, feelings of hopelessness or despair from circumstances.

[30:03] There are circumstances in our lives where it just gets hard. The Hebrews were a community of faith where life had gotten hard. The same sorts of things they were experiencing.

[30:16] They had discouragement. They had pain. They had feelings of hopelessness and despair. And they just frankly wanted to quit. They didn't want to do this faith thing anymore. They just wanted to give up, abandon the faith altogether.

[30:30] And the author of Hebrews writes to them to encourage them and urges them, stay with it. Don't quit. Don't grow weary.

[30:42] Don't lose heart. And the way the writer gave encouragement was by naming others who had gone before them and proclaiming what they had done by faith.

[30:54] To give inspiration and encouragement to the Hebrews. Now, in a broken world full of people who are also experiencing hopelessness, despair, discouragement, at a time when so many people will often feel like just giving up, it's a message for us to hear and especially to share.

[31:15] In this, it goes from Hebrews 11, 1. And then it actually goes all the way through. And it lists many, many people. So I encourage you to grab a Bible and go through those names.

[31:29] Name after name after name. By faith. By faith. By faith. Abraham. By faith. Moses. By faith. Noah. By faith. Enoch. By faith. Rahab. By faith. David.

[31:39] By faith. Gideon. By faith. By faith. By faith. By faith. By faith. Stories of heroes of the faith. Now, when we think of heroes, we often think that they're people who are brave.

[31:54] They're mighty. They're good. They're selfless. And yet, each person on the list also had issues. Also had sin in their life.

[32:07] They also had problems. They had trials. They had struggles. They had trials. Just like the Hebrews. Just like you. And me.

[32:18] So they made it onto the list of heroes. Because in spite of everything, they lived by faith. They walked in faith.

[32:30] They moved in faith. They flowed in faith. Living water. Flowing freely. Going where God said to go. Doing what God said to do. They were just regular people.

[32:42] Just like you and me. People of faith. Not perfect. But willing. Open to the spirit.

[32:54] By faith. By faith. Abraham. God said to Abraham. Abraham, I want you to go. I want you to pack up everything. And I want you to move.

[33:05] I'm not going to tell you where. You're just going to have to trust me the whole way. And Abraham did. He said yes. And he did.

[33:15] He left the world he knew. And he traveled to a far away place. And he not only did that. But he also committed to God alone. In spite of the culture around him.

[33:27] He lived in a fluidity. So the river of God's living water could flow. Open. Willing. Ready. By faith. Abraham said yes.

[33:38] By faith. And went by faith. I received a call from the district superintendent. Well first I received a call from our district superintendent. Saying that I was going to receive a call.

[33:50] From a district superintendent in another district. What's that mean? So then I'm waiting. And I get this call. That I'm going to be appointed to Rome, New York.

[34:02] Two churches. And you know. Luckily we were in Zoom things. So I'm Googling at the same time. Rome. Where's Rome? I don't know where I'm going. What are you asking me to do here Lord?

[34:13] Are you serious? Wow. But I'm going. I'm going by faith. And I'm moving in faith.

[34:23] And I'm walking by faith. And not by sight. What is faith? Faith is confidence. In what we hope for. Assurance in what we do not see.

[34:35] There's another translator who said it a little bit differently. Now faith is the reality of what we hope for. The evidence of what we do not see. Faith is the reality.

[34:46] So it's not just a belief in our mind or in our heart only. Faith is a lifestyle. A lifestyle of trust in God.

[34:58] Based on knowing God's character. knowing that however, whenever, whatever, wherever, no matter what, that God is with us and loves us and that following God matters. It matters because of the hope of God's promises.

[35:25] And where does that come from? That comes from relationship. Relationship with God. Relationship knowing who, not only who God is, but knowing God personally. We know God and we live by faith with the rivers of the living water flowing freely as we begin then to experience God's power within our lives. Cool, fresh water that quenches our thirst. So faith is not pretending that everything is okay when it isn't. It's also not expecting that if we believe hard enough that God has to do what we say. It's not like that at all. That's not how it works. But, but faith is when we trust in God, when we didn't know what was coming, and we saw, we experienced what God can do.

[36:30] Faith is trusting God to enter into the situation, and sometimes we don't see it right away. How many of us have gone through really difficult times and look back and we see, we see how God has moved all along the way. I see how God was with me all the way. I have felt and experienced the power of God in my life in such an incredible way. There's no going back. No going back. Faith in God. The faith of Abraham and all of the other heroes named was just not, it was not just an internalized decision, and it wasn't just an emotion. Their life was in alignment. See, faith is a lifestyle, and it's measured by the movement in our lives, the actions we choose to take. Faith makes an impact then on others. If we move in faith, that impacts others. It witnesses about and for God, and it makes a splash, splash, splashes of living water that touch another when a wave of faith comes crashing by.

[37:41] Swells of living water moving and flowing by faith, and sometimes we don't know the impact of that wave of faith right away. If ever, did it splash someone and pique their curiosity? Did it quench someone's thirst? Did they grab a boogie board or a surfboard and ride that wave of faith? Or did they become so immersed in the living water that they lifted their feet in anticipation and swelled within the wave of faith with joy? It has an impact? It has an impact. Just like your faith has an impact on others.

[38:30] By faith, all of you. By faith, all of you. By faith, Debbie. By faith, Adrian. By faith, Angela. By faith, Bill. By faith, Mike.

[38:45] By faith, Sherry. By faith. I could go person by person here and name it and say, by faith, you. You have made an impact on me and an impact in the world, an impact on others in this church. Your faith speaks as it moves.

[39:04] By faith. By faith, lives have been touched. By your faith, lives, many lives have been touched.

[39:15] Hurts have been healed. Children have been raised. People have been fed. People have been clothed. People have been ministered to. By faith, we have filled the sanctuary with songs of joy and hope.

[39:31] By faith, there were some who were at the church up the hill. And by faith, they moved and built that building over there. By faith, more added on to that. And built this sanctuary in the preschool wing. And by faith, even more added on to that wave.

[39:46] And we built the fellowship hall in even more. And by faith, even more is to come. As we move and flow in God's will. By faith, hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of children have been reached.

[40:02] Singing and dancing and praising as we filled this place. By faith, teenagers went across the state and sometimes out of state.

[40:14] Along with a bunch of adults too. And they gave up a week of their lives, a week of their vacations to go work their tails off. Building homes, working with people.

[40:27] Because living in that faith mattered. Because reaching those people by faith mattered. And we could see the touch that that happened.

[40:39] And we don't even know where it's going from that. It's a movement, a wave of faith. A wave of faith as we, some of us, put pink flamingos on lawns in the middle of a snowstorm.

[40:52] Because we're raising awareness for children's hunger and poverty. God is calling us. God is calling us by faith.

[41:04] Do you hear it? God is calling us. God is calling all of us to continue this wave of faith. To continue this wave of faith. By faith, we opened during a global pandemic.

[41:18] And by your faith, we held each other close. Even if it was from a distance. By your faith, we loved God and we loved people.

[41:32] By faith, we served. By faith, we have cared for and loved one another. When it was easy and when it was hard. By faith, we do hard things.

[41:47] By faith, we get through hard things. Ordinary people like you and me doing extraordinary things by faith.

[42:00] You and so many others in this faith family around you and before you are witnesses of faith. Of those who have gone through hardship, pain, discouragement.

[42:17] And yet, still flowed in the love and grace of God by faith. Life has not always been easy.

[42:31] But by faith, we are filled like a flood of rushing water. Living water flowing within us that forms a wave. A wave of faith in actions.

[42:41] Waves and waves of grace. And I think we need to do that. We can do that. A wave. We're going to start here. And we're going to do a wave.

[42:52] Are you ready? One, two, three. Wave. Come on. Waves of mercy. Waves of mercy. Waves. Waves of faith.

[43:03] Waves of unending love. Oh, waves and waves of faith just moving. Moving. And it touches one another.

[43:13] It touches as it flows. Jesus said that we as believers have a river of living water flowing through us. Not stagnant water with a bad taste and a bad smell.

[43:27] But living water of the Spirit within us. That moves. That moves. That moves. Flowing where the Spirit says to flow. Moving when the Spirit says to move.

[43:38] By faith, hope, trust, and unending love. And we do the wave. You ready? And the wave. Woo! Woo!

[43:49] We have to say, we! We! As the waves of faith hit us. Oh, and it splashes onto the scene as the water moves and flows. It impacts the water around it.

[44:01] It swells. It ripples. It splashes. Jesus' death on a cross and resurrection created a movement. A swell that rippled and splashed into the world.

[44:15] A great wave of grace. A small group of people following Jesus were touched by that wave.

[44:27] And moved by that wave. And then they moved. And they spoke. And they loved by the Spirit. And they changed the world.

[44:40] And that movement, that wave movement, continues by the witness of faith in you and in me.

[44:52] As we need to have water to live, we need living water of Christ for eternal life. Don't let anything block your faith. Don't let anything block that faith that's flowing inside of you.

[45:06] Continue to embrace your faith. To flow freely. And when the Spirit says to flow, go. And continue the ripple effect of grace.

[45:18] Creating waves and waves of unending love by your witness. By your faith. Faith. And the faith. Faith. So what is faith?

[45:28] Faith is confidence in Jesus. Who died for you and me. And for the world. And rose again so that we may have eternal life.

[45:42] Eternal life that starts the moment we believe. Faith is the assurance that when we follow, when the Spirit says to move, to flow, that there is a ripple effect.

[45:55] That lives are touched. And that a kingdom wave has started. And the wave. Can we do it? The wave. A kingdom wave has started. That a heavenly splash is on the scene.

[46:09] We may not see it right away. But faith is knowing. Trusting in God. Fixing our eyes on Jesus. The pioneer and perfecter of our faith. Jesus.

[46:21] Who went willingly to the cross. Because of the joy of knowing what that kind of love in this world would do.

[46:33] A wave of amazing grace. A wave of amazing grace that saved a wretch like me. And like a flood, his mercy reigns.

[46:48] And so I'd like to invite you all to stand as we worship together. And open yourselves up to the Holy Spirit moving. That you may experience the amazing grace.

[47:00] That wave of unending love coming down upon you. Filling you to overflowing. That it may be flowing and touching and moving others. An impact of God's love.

[47:21] Amazing grace.

[47:40] How sweet the sound. That saved a wretch like me. That was grace that taught my heart to fear.

[48:11] And grace my fears relieved. How precious did that grace appear.

[48:25] The hour I curse be. My days are gone. I've been set free.

[48:37] My God, my Savior, has ransomed me. And like a flood, His mercy reigns.

[48:52] Unending love. Amazing grace. The Lord has promised good to me.

[49:16] His word my hope secures. He will my shield and portion be.

[49:29] He will my shield and portion be. As long as time endures. My days are gone.

[49:40] I've been set free. My God, my Savior, has ransomed me. And like a flood, His mercy reigns.

[49:57] Unending love. Amazing grace. Amazing grace. I've been set free. My days are gone. I've been set free.

[50:08] My days are gone. I've been set free. My God, my Savior, has ransomed me. My days are ransomed me. My days are ransomed me. And like a flood, His mercy reigns. Unending love. Amazing grace.

[50:19] Amazing grace. The earth shall soon dissolve. Like snow. The sun for the sun for the sun. The sun for the sun. The sun for the sun.

[50:30] Amazing grace. The earth shall soon dissolve like snow The sun forbear to shine But God who called me here below Will be forever mine Will be forever mine You are forever mine Holy God, you are forever ours. Amen.

[59:51] The mystery Of faith Christ has died Christ is risen Christ will come again Pour out your Holy Spirit On us gathered here And on these gifts Of bread and wine Make them be for us The body And blood Of Christ That we may be For the world The body of Christ Redeemed by his blood By your spirit Make us one with Christ One with each other And one in ministry To all the world Until Christ comes In final victory And we feast At his heavenly banquet Through your son Jesus Christ With the Holy Spirit In your Holy Church All honor and glory Is yours Almighty Father Now and forever Amen And now let us pray The prayer that Jesus Taught us saying Our Father Who art in heaven Hallowed be thy name Thy kingdom come

[60:51] Thy will be done On earth As it is in heaven Give us this day Our daily bread And forgive us Our trespasses As we forgive those Who trespass against us And lead us not Into temptation But deliver us From evil For thine is the kingdom And the power And the glory Forever and ever Amen I'd like to invite those Who are serving To come forward As we come forward For communion We have an open hand A receiving We're not going to take it We're not going to grab it By faith We open ourselves And we receive So we have an open hand If you would like To have the sealed kind Instead You're just going to go Right on by And go to a station That will have the sealed kind And that's fine as well Come join us Let's go перв Glhövers
